The correct blood pressure measurement

The phenomenon known as the „white coat effect“ must be taken into account.
This effect frequently occurs during blood pressure measurement at doctors’ surgeries, so that the value measured by the doctor is not representative of the patient’s blood pressure in everyday life. This results from nervousness, fear or excitement on the part of the patient when at the doctor’s, which can cause artificially high values to be recorded. In order to distinguish this „doctor’s surgery high blood pressure” from real high blood pressure, the self-monitoring of blood pressure is an important and recognised method.

Since blood pressure is known to fluctuate during the course of the day, the single measurements taken by the doctor are only partly suitable as a basis for diagnosis. The patient should therefore carry out several measurements a day under ideal conditions.

In order to obtain correct values when measuring blood pressure using either device, you should pay attention to the following:

  • make sure that the cuff is the right size
  • relax for 5 minutes before taking the measurement
  • sit comfortably but upright during the measuring procedure
  • avoid drinking, eating and smoking for at least 30 minutes before taking the measurement
  • avoid moving or speaking during measurement,
  • relax the arm muscles during measurement, breath calmly
  • always measure your blood pressure at the same time each day, on the same arm and in the same position
